Emerson to be State Budget Director
Here are portions of two articles from the Attorney General's website about City Council's pay being reduced, not eliminated, prefaced with source announcing Bob Emerson's upcoming appointment as Granholm's new state budget director. He was instrumental in the legal action being filed over council retroactive pay. Is it possible we'll see great changes in the state's budget? Emerson to become state budget director

Cox Files Suit Against Flint for Illegal Pay Raise August 9, 2004 LANSING – Attorney General Mike Cox announced today a lawsuit against the City of Flint, the Mayor of Flint and specific members of the Flint City Council to compel the City Council to repay the more than $235,000 they illegally granted themselves by resolution on July 1, 2004. (snip)

In July 2002, a review team and an Emergency Financial Manager were appointed under the authority of Michigan law to manage the City of Flint’s financial crisis, which amounted to more than $20 million in debt. The Emergency Financial Manager took a number of actions to cure and correct the city’s financial condition, including four reductions in pay and benefits to members of the Flint City Council.

On July 1, 2004, the City Council approved by a 7-0 vote a resolution introduced by Donald J. Williamson, Mayor of the City of Flint, to grant themselves more than $235,000 in retroactive back pay and benefits that they collectively lost under the tenure of the Emergency Financial Manager, Ed Kurtz. The question was raised by State Senator Bob Emerson (D-Flint) and posed to the Attorney General regarding the legality of the resolution. Cox contends that their actions are illegal. (snip) * * * *

Cox Wins Flint Illegal Pay Raise Lawsuit May 19, 2005 LANSING - Attorney General Mike Cox announced today that members of the Flint City Council must return to the city treasury more than $235,000 in illegal pay raises they granted themselves in 2004. On Wednesday, an Ingham County Circuit Court judge declared the raises violated the Michigan Constitution. (snip) . . .

As part of his plan to return the city to financial stability, Kurtz reduced the pay for City Council members. However, once the situation stabilized, Kurtz reinstated members’ pay to 95% of pre-emergency levels. Kurtz’s tenure ended on June 30, 2004. Less than 24 hours later, on July 1, the City Council voted 7-0 to grant themselves more than $235,000 in retroactive pay and benefits. Referred to the Attorney General’s Office by Senator Bob Emerson (D-Flint), Cox filed suit on August 9, 2004.

Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Joyce Draganchuk agreed with Cox that the City Council’s actions violated Article 11, Section 3 of the Michigan Constitution, which bars retroactive pay raises by elected officials. (snip)

Issues: Dismissal of the plaintiff’s employment discrimination complaint and entry of an order of settlement; MCR 2.507(H); Mikonczyk v. Detroit Newspapers, Inc.; Whether the settlement agreement placed on the record in open court was only a tentative agreement; Whether the order of settlement contained terms not specifically agreed on by the parties

Court: Michigan Court of Appeals (Unpublished)
Case Name: Anderson v. Wayne County Cmty. Coll.

e-Journal Number: 34244
Judge(s): Per Curiam – Wilder, Kelly, and Borrello
Concluding comparison of the written settlement agreement to the settlement terms specified on the record in open court verified agreement on most of the terms, the court held the parties agreed to the material terms of the agreement and affirmed the trial court’s decision to enforce the agreement. Plaintiff sued the defendant alleging racial discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in violation of the CRA.

The trial court engaged the parties in a settlement conference, during which they negotiated and reached a settlement agreement. However, plaintiff later filed objections to the written settlement agreement, asserting it contained items not part of the agreement and matters exceeding what was discussed on the record. The court concluded while plaintiff initially balked at the terms of the proposed agreement, the transcript indicated his ultimate concurrence with most of the terms subsequently reduced to writing by defendant.

The trial court gave plaintiff ample opportunity to refuse the settlement agreement in open court. Most significantly, when the trial court asked him whether he wished the trial court to accept the agreement as presented, plaintiff answered with an unequivocal "yes." The fact the terms of the agreement were reviewed and discussed repeatedly with plaintiff during the proceedings, together with his unequivocal acceptance, led to the conclusion the trial court did not err in approving the settlement agreement and dismissing the complaint.

Affirmed but remanded for the trial court to strike two immaterial provisions in the agreement to which plaintiff did not agree on the record.

SAGINAW (WJRT) - (12/28/06)--A familiar face in Saginaw's city government says her career will come to a close next year.
Current Mayor Pro Tem Wilmer Jones Ham says she will not run for re-election when her term ends next November.
She has spent 14 years on the council and in 2001 was elected by the council as the city's first female mayor.

"She has served this community well, and she has done it with great love and affection for the city and its citizens," said Mayor Carol Cottrel.
This past spring investigators named Ham a person of interest in an investigation of a fire that destroyed her Mercedes while sitting in her driveway.
Midland County Prosecutor Michael Carpenter says there will be no ruling in the case until after the first of the year.

(TV-5) -- Saginaw Mayor Pro-tem Wilmer Jones Ham says she will not seek re-election. The Mayor Pro-tem has several reasons why she won't seek re-election, and things certainly won't be the same without Ham in office.

For 14 years, Wilmer Jones Ham has served on the Saginaw City Council. She was Mayor back in 2004 when she led the victory parade celebrating the Detroit Pistons' World Championship. Her son, Darvin, was on that team.

Ham declined an on-camera interview, saying she's dealing with a personal family issue. She did tell TV-5, "I have had the cooperation of the city. Now it's time to turn it over to younger people. It has been a blessed experience."

Ham has been surrounded by controversy since last year. She was named as a "person of interest" in the burning of her own vehicle, but she was never charged.

Backers laud councilwoman
Thursday, December 28, 2006
JOE SNAPPERTHE SAGINAW NEWS
Amid bad publicity for Saginaw City Hall and a lengthy criminal probe into the burning of her car, Mayor Pro Tem Wilmer Jones Ham has renewed her pledge not to run for the City Council in 2007.

"I've had 14 years on the council," Ham said during Wednesday's council session. "It's time to get the young people involved."

Ham's comments came after two residents criticized what they said were unfair and untrue media portrayals of Ham, a former mayor. A pastor called some of the reports "character assassination."

Last spring, prosecutors called Ham a "person of interest" in an investigation into a fire that destroyed her Mercedes in her home's driveway. But the probe has stalled after a change of jurisdiction to Midland County.

In addition, depositions filed as part of former City Manager Cecil A. Collins Jr.'s lawsuit against the city raised an allegation that Ham's vote was
for sale
on a motion to fire Collins
in exchange for a
contribution to her
student scholarship fund.

Ham has declined comment on the allegation. A judge on Dec. 21 threw out the lawsuit, in which Collins alleged conspiracy and breach of contract. Collins' lawyer has not said if he will appeal the decision.

On Wednesday, Ham backer Audrey Beatty said the mayor pro tem deserved only support during her "ordeal." Listing Ham's long roster of community involvement, Beatty said Ham is "a positive force toward the development of Saginaw."

Without singling out any media outlets, the Rev. Cirven D. Merrill assailed recent coverage of City Hall and assured Ham that he and the community he said he represents are in her corner.
"The city of Saginaw and especially the black community are appalled and outraged at all of the negative publicity," said Merrill, pastor of Greater Works Ministries, 1014 Sears. "We do not believe most of that stuff."

Merrill stopped short of specifying the allegations to which he was alluding.
"We know (Ham) to be a pillar in the community and a beacon of light," he said.
Ham, who turns 57 on Jan. 9, has said more than once in the past that this term was her last.
After the meeting, Ham said she finalized her decision about a year ago, stressing it was time for younger blood at the council table.

She also said she wants to prepare for her May wedding to Saginaw resident Curtis McZee, a deacon at Ham's church, Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 810 Cathay in Saginaw, rather than hit the campaign trial.

"I've got to get ready for my hubby," Ham said. v

GENESEE AND FLINT AREA
In what may be one of the most unusual and controversial murder cases in the Flint area this year, a Genesee County district judge ruled Wednesday that a young woman who stabbed the man who was abusing her mother must be bound over to circuit court on an open charge of murder.

But the judge made clear that he didn't like ordering that.

"I feel very badly for her," said Mt. Morris District Judge Larry Stecco, in his ruling on the murder charge against Tanjermeeka M. Jones, 20, of Genesee Township. "I have no alternative but to bind over (the case) as charged."

FLINT INSTITUTIONS AND NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS

Dear neighbors,

We have received numerous complaints about trees being cut down along Gilkey Creek. One neighbor told us he called Bob Cook, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Flint, and that Mr. Cook said the College Cultural Neighborhood Association supports the cutting. Let us assure you, no elected CCNA officer has lent support to this. Mike called Mr. Cook to ask about the project, and Mr. Cook said he had not heard any negative feedback about the cutting. So we are asking you to call his office and ask him and his crew to stop.

I was thinking those banks are eroded enough without cutting out the small trees that hold soil in place, but to be sure, I call Brent Nickola at UM-Flint's Center for Applied Environmental Research. Brent worked on the Gilkey Creek Watershed Management Plan for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. He said the UM-F is in the process of recommending to MDEQ that vegetation along the banks of the Gilkey be RESTORED – not removed. Removing live stream bank vegetation affects water quality negatively.

Mike and I both looked at the cutting near Pierce School and we saw many small undiseased trees cut at the base. I'm thinking some well-meaning person may have thought it would be nice to visually open up the sign and entrance of the golf course and community center. The problem with this is that when it rains, there is a surge in water flow. Frequently the water rises to the top of the banks.

Fast-moving water gushes through the banks, and with no live roots to hold the banks in place, the banks will erode and become more unstable. As they erode the water becomes more silty. This harms water quality, negatively impacting fish and wildlife downstream.

Proponents of cutting may point to last year's clearing of brush on the riverbanks at UMF campus to visually open up the view of the river. Keep in mind, the hydrologic forces are very different there because of the dams.

Surges in flow are regulated, whereas the Gilkey is not. Additionally, we have received numerous calls from people who are quite worried about the wild woody area south of the creek, and do not want it compromised. (Not every area has to look like a groomed park.)

We appreciate many of the things Mr. Cook’s department has done for our community, such as removing dead trees that have fallen into the creek. We should let him know this, but also make it clear when we do not want our neighborhood’s health and beauty compromised.

Please call him today at 691-9345, and ask him to STOP THE CUTTING. The creek is not a park, and we should not attempt to create park-like conditions along the creek. Removing obviously dead trees from the creek is acceptable. Then please drop a line to me to let me know how it went. Thanks for taking care of your part of the earth.

From Ted Jankowski

In response to a GOOD MORNING FLINT demand that the Flint City Council give back the money the Attorney General said they took illegally Ted said:

Now Terry,
WHy do you repeat something that you and I both know isn't true! The Council members didn't award themselves anything. You and I both know what Kurtz actually did! Whose budget he actually used! Who it was that brought the back pay to the council! If 80,000 could open a senior center I'm sure 140,000 paid to a journal carrier could have open a senior center and a community center! Sure I love looking at things that way!

How long did the council go without pay? Take he amount they received and divide it by the number of months they didn't receive thier slary. Doesn't seem to big anymore does it? Yet they continued on! They voted to receive thier RIGHTFUL pay!

How much effort would you put in even if someone told you, "You have to work 6 months to a year without pay?" They didn't run the city out of Money! When they figured out that there was something wrong, they BEGGED the state to step in. We both know what power they actually and how they get their information about the budget. The same way this new council does. Through the Mayor's office! Oh and I do firmly believe a workman is worthy of his hire. If it hadn't been for that former council going to the State.

We would probably just now be going into a State takeover. (but this last statement is only conjecture).

9761. ED KOCH (DEMOCRAT) by
Bush08
, 12/28/06 23:14 ET
President George W. Bush, vilified by many, supported by some, is a hero to me.
Why do I say that? It's not because I agree with the President's domestic agenda. It's not because I think he's done a perfect job in the White House.
George Bush is a hero to me because he has courage. The President does what he believes to be in the best interest of the United States. He sticks with his beliefs, no matter how intense the criticism and invective that are directed against him every day.

The enormous defeat President Bush suffered with the loss of both Houses of Congress has not caused him to retreat from his position that the U.S. alone now stands between a radical Islamic takeover of many of the world’s governments in the next 30 or more years. If that takeover occurs, we will suffer an enslavement that will threaten our personal freedoms and take much of the world back into the Dark Ages.

Our major ally in this war against the forces of darkness, Great Britain, is still being led by an outstanding prime minister, Tony Blair. However, Blair will soon be set out to pasture, which means Great Britain will leave our side and join France, Germany, Spain and other countries that foolishly believe they can tame the wolf at the door and convert it into a domestic pet that will live in peace with them.

These dreamers naively believe that if we feed the wolves what they demand, they will go away. But that won’t happen. Appeasement never works. The wolves always come back for more and more, and when we have nothing left to give, they come for us. Thank you ED.

(TV-5) -- Four former Flint City Council members may be heading to court to turn over salaries they earned after the state took over the city's finances.
The council members awarded themselves back pay in 2004 after the Emergency Financial Manager cut that out of the budget. Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has given the four until December 27th to pay back the money.
Only one of the members has repaided the money. The remaining council memebers are disputing the amount they owe.
According to the Flint Journal, only one councilman has returned the money. The others still owe between 16 and 17 thousand dollars each.

FLINT (WJRT) - (12/18/06)--The city of Flint says it is ready to collect more than $80,000 from several current and previous City Council members.
Nearly two years after an Ingham County judge ordered members of council to repay money they awarded themselves, Monday night the city of Flint said at least five council members have not paid up.
Late Monday afternoon, the mayor's office released five letters from the Michigan Attorney General's Office that were sent to those council members, telling them they have until Wednesday to pay back the money.
According to the letters, current Councilman Scott Kincaid owes more than $17,800. Carolyn Sims owes just over $16,800.
Former Councilman Johnnie Coleman owes over $17,500. Former Councilman Ed Taylor owed nearly $18,000. And former Councilman Mark Horrigan owes just over $16,600.
The mayor's office says that it will go after the money if it is not paid by the Wednesday deadline.
This all stems from a resolution passed by the council in 2004 to reinstate more than a quarter of a million dollars in back pay just one day after the state take over of the city ended.
Council's salaries had been cut by former Emergency Financial Manager Ed Kurtz.
The council claimed Kurtz had no authority to do it, but after several court hearings a judge ruled the money had to be paid back.
Now the city says it is going to uphold the current and former council members to the ruling.
We spoke to all five of the current and former council members by phone Monday afternoon. Coleman says he has not received a letter.
Sims and Horrigan declined to comment. Taylor says he knows nothing about the judgment. Kincaid says he received a letter and plans on sending in a check for the full amount by Wednesday.

Ok Explain then why he would blow so much off the Budget on Hiring Officers that can't do anything? WOuldn't it have made more sense to open the Jail rather than hire more officers that cannot arrest criminals? WOuldn't it have made more sense to Open the Jail rather than Pay City WOrkers to sit at home and do nothing? Or Pay a Journal Carrier 140.000 to deliver papers to City Hall? Or pay Sgts not to drive their police Vehicles? It just seems to me (And I'm no rocket scientist) That Actually having a place to put criminals. Instead of having a policy of Catch and release. WOuld make more sense. If you cannot arrest criminals? How many officers does it take to reduce crime? 100? 1000? 2000? I'm sorry. But it's commonsense to me. That without having the city jail open. The number of Officers we had in 2003 was more than what was needed to fight and reduce crime in Flint. THat's a Fact! Not my opinion! It was done. He has hired 30 officers in three years and crime continues to rise. There are so many reasons why crime is going up. "Not enough officers" isn't one of them.

-Saving Schools
A SOLUTION: Efficiency could be the key to survival
Small districts may pave way
December 27, 2006
Detroit Free Press
Consolidating services under intermediate school districts, while retaining local control of academics, may be the only way tiny school districts are going to survive, said State Superintendent Mike Flanigan.
"There's an argument for small school districts. They're a large part of Americana that I think works very well," Flanigan said. "Why would you want to blow that up? Why not just be more efficient?"
But these tiny districts' experiments in consortiums and cost cutting could have statewide implications. Michigan faces a $3-billion budget deficit, and it's almost certain that schools across the state will continue to tighten their budgets in the near future.
The small districts could be paving the way for larger districts to survive in tough economic times.

-FIEGER WINS ONE

Detroit Free Press
Southfield lawyer Geoffrey Fieger scored a point in his feud with the state Supreme Court on Tuesday when a federal court ruled he can continue his efforts to disqualify certain justices he claims are biased against him from hearing his cases.
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati said Fieger can challenge Michigan's rules for determining when a justice should be disqualified from hearing cases -- rules he has called unconstitutional. He has said his motions to have justices removed from cases were never heard by an impartial arbiter but instead decided by the justices themselves.

SAGINAW (WJRT) - (12/26/06)--The year 2006 got off to a violent start in the city of Saginaw with a number of shootings right after the first of the year.
Crime was also a big topic for residents to vote on as three separate crime related millages were put before voters.
Jimahle Donald, 17, was in the wrong in place at the wrong time when he was shot to death Jan. 3. It was Saginaw county's first homicide of 2006, and one of several shootings in the city of Saginaw in the month of January.
But the killing didn't stop, and violence has been on the rise in the entire county for the last few years.
In 2005, there were 25 murders compared with 11 in 2001, and that prompted a push for a Saginaw County millage which would have added more than 50 new officers countywide.
It would be one of three proposals city and county residents would vote on in 2006 when it came to public safety.
In May, the city asked voters to save 26 police positions and bring back five laid-off officers and save 25 firefighting jobs as well.
The result was a resounding win, and boosted the morale at the Saginaw City Police Department, which has seen its staff cut in half because of budget problems over the last three years.
Momentum was felt when the Saginaw County No Boundaries proposal went before voters in August. It went down to defeat by a big margin.
That defeat also meant 14 sheriff's deputies could lose their job at the beginning of 2007, so two new proposals were put before county voters in November -- one to save the 14 jobs; another to add seven new positions.
The 14 jobs were saved, but again, residents said no to adding any police presence.
With a few days to go, Saginaw County will end the year with at least 26 homicides -- one more than in 2005 -- so expect to hear more about the cost of crime fighting in 2007.

Several council people are disputing the amount they owe.
According to the Flint Journal, only one councilman has returned the money. The others still owe between 16 and 17 thousand dollars each.

-This place has become the proverbial 21st C small town coffee shop of old, where the regulars gathered round to "chew the fat" and discuss the affairs of the day. The topics inevitably focus on local issues as those tend to affect everyone that gathers here, the same. Not that state, national & international events also aren't important, but there are so many more parties involved in those issues. But Flint, and immediate surroundings is our purview. So after a while, we identify with, even if we don't always agree with, the "regulars" [read registered and regularly posting members]. Contrast that with "guests". They can be anyone and everyone behind that "name" on the post. Quite possibly several people using the same guest name at different times. You really don't know for certain who you are responding to. Nor therefore, do you really know if what they post is what they believe much less factual. Whereas, when Adam, Al G, Kathy Ellwood, mama bear, Rap or Ted et al, post, you know who's there, you know where they are coming from, that what they post is what they think, and not just a troll to provoke reactions. So, yeah, I'm with you Roscoe. I think I'm going to ignore "guest" posts from this point on.

9748. Serious question for Genesee county by

Residents.
I live in N. Oakland County and I am selling my home. I have a unique career and it makes no difference where I live.
I grew up in the Flint area and friends that still reside there are attempting to sell me on moving back. Personally, I see no reason to live in Genesee County, given the demise of Flint area I saw coming over 20 years ago.
So the question is this...real estate prices aside, give me some good reasons to live in this area.
Thanks in advance for your responses.

The clio area has a few good reasons to come here despite our local fighting which all communitys have1. good housing stock2. fair housing prices3. a good school system4. good retail growth5. low crime rate6. Great park system7. And some very fine people

Linden was the smallest of all Metro league schools. Clio is probably 2nd smallest. East/West has close to 2600 students combined. And Creek is still big but Oxford and Brandon are big schools compared to the others. And Holly and Fenton are no push-overs when it comes to student enrollment.
-From Flint Talk-Larry

Yes. Terry it is a tough question.
All of the reasons you mentioned are good reasons to stay here is a few more.
Fresh water oil is running out .
But the most precious commodity known to man is fresh water witch we have plenty of. Higher education is plentiful its here for the taking.

Down town is a well kept secret. no crowds no crime and racial diversity. The thing that would set down town flint off as a force. would be wireless Internet and a few well thought out festivals. to compliment or off set the new housing. what would be really awesome is if 4 blocks of saginaw street was set aside as a auto free zone.

No cars at all from just past the hotel going south . more crims, more jazz, more, art and possibly a winter festival of ice sculptures. here is a question that i just wish i could answer or get a workable answer too. how do we turn around the perception of flint. nationally to bring in such things and make them worth while to all aspects of the general public. I'm so close to not responding it seems hopeless some one leed!!!!!!!!!!!!

-From Flint Citizen
As a Realtor who specializes in Flint, Michigan, the biggest problem and/orconcern I hear from potential buyers and sellers is The Flint School District.People don't want to live in Flint because of the sub par quality ofschools.

This comes from people of all ages and races. This hurts propertyvalues, which in turn is less money in the city coffers. Property values in Flint,Michigan are about 40% less than other areas. It is more affordable and somemayeven call it cheap because of the poor schools. If you have poor schools itdoes affect peoples property values.

The bottom line is that if we want Flintto come back, we need a complete overhaul of Flint Community Schools!! Theroot evil of Flint is its poor schools, which in turn creates more crime, less educated people, less jobs, less city funds, less population, lowerproperty values, poor infrastructure etc..

If we can provide a WORLD CLASSeducationfor our kids, people will move to Flint. Until we all come together for thecommon goal of "A World Class Education" for Flint kids, Flint will still bestatus quo.Ryan M. Eashoo

Democrats Pledge to Restrain Spending Determined to banish their old tax-and-spend image, Democrats want to shrink the federal deficit, preserve tax cuts for the middle class and challenge the president to raise money for the Iraq war when they take control of Congress next week. But it won't be easy. (By Lori Montgomery, The Washington Post)

-Why We're 'Not Winning'
By Bret Stephens

President Bush startled reporters when he acknowledged in a recent interview that we are "not winning" in Iraq, after long insisting we were. That doesn't go far enough. Even as we are stalemated in Iraq, the gains the administration previously made in Afghanistan, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon and Palestine are steadily being eroded. Maybe it's a case of returning to the mean.
Most people would call it losing.

So was the invasion of Iraq the original sin? Certainly not. What's happening, rather, is that we are suffering the consequences of policy mistakes of relatively recent vintage.

The pro-affirmative action group By Any Means Necessary - known as BAMN - was the first to jump into the legal fray. Then three universities, including the University of Michigan, filed a motion to delay implementing changes during the current admissions cycle. And last week, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and the NAACP's Detroit Chapter filed their own lawsuit against the proposal.

It really doesn't matter if we are pro or anti Bush. Doesn't matter how we feel about Iraq, our government, politics, the crime rate in Flint, Clio or anything else. What matters, on this Holy night, is that we all believe in the same thing. Peace on Earth, good will toward men, the families who love us and make our lives complete, the roofs over our head and the freedom to live in a country where we can express our views and not have to worry about retaliation. What matters is a group of people who aregue daily about their difference of opinions and yet come together during this season of peace and wish each other Merry Christmas. I hope each of you have a wonderful Christmas filled with all the important things in life.

9746. How was your Christmas holiday? by
, 12/26/06 7:01 ET
it was good for us spending time with family and friends. Never mind what Wall Street & Madison ave. tell us that Christmas means spending money but rather a time to be with the people you love. My heart goes out to those families unable to spend time with loved ones fighting wars on foreign lands. I look forward to the new year and pray for better things to come.

I'm just frustrated at this latest cotton candy sale. Lot's of fluffy sweat tasting stuff that won't fill you up, and only make you sick when you get too much. wow my Christmas Gift

Well this is some thing I’m sitting in my chair and hear a car pull in the drive way
Its about 10 pm newer pick up ford. I think dam who the hell is this to my surprise a friend from the past. A good old boy truck driver friend of mine who i havent seen in some weeks.hes
got a tray a Tupperware tray that I’m thinking looks like bad news something i just don’t want no part of.

so i beat feet to the back door to greet the guy and he walks in like its Christmas and jolly as any eastsider with a few hundred bucks left after the bills have been paid.
he sits in the laundry room where the office chairs are at and the video shoots usualy take place and starts to talk. and sets the tray on the desk i give the tray a look and ask whats in the tray ?
fudge he says!! fudge i go( really) to my surprise realizing i just judged a book by its cover he smiled i smiled and and had a coffee and a piece of fudge with my friend.
but that’s not all he explains. he says Larry i got a deal for you?
I’m thinking man i cant do nothing I’m unemployed calling Marvin and living by the skin of my tooth waiting for spring or the 1st of the year to get hot on the job trai.l Plus i still owe the guy 3 hundred from a Chevy deal that went bad a year or so ago but its no big deal. He owed me 3 hundred for 2 years once.

But not being rude i listened to his pitch.and ate more fudge and my wife was all ears too!!
How would you like to run a truck for me he says. Huh i reply yeah i enterd into a deal with some yo yo who has a few trucks my friend says. we can take over and they already have a lease!!!!! no gm, no NYC , no hazmat, A grim came over my face like water over a dam. then the print, the fine print

finger print loads from mount Morris to Florida a dozen stops each way omg i think I’m 43 fat and haven’t had to fingerprint loads sense i was 21 especially 12 stops up and down .
Then back to the pitch as my grin subsides. 1000 on 5000 straight pay 10 days out 5 days home. Witch in truck driver reality based terms means 22 days a month work 3200 dollars take home pay. 90% I’m going to do it. but i got to look at this truck first and get the rest of the story. that’s a pretty goodalmost Christmas gift for myself. But better yet my family’s Christmas gift was best Wyatt came home our 5 y/o grand son who was hospitalized with viral meningitis symptoms.

-Army Capt. Jonathan Bodenhamer, 29,

Sacrifice: War's burden falls on the few Army Capt. Jonathan Bodenhamer, 29, is a heart warming face of the war this Christmas. He has just returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq and is delighting in spending the season with his wife and 7-month-old daughter, enjoying the foods and lifestyle of the America he says he loves and has fought to protect. "It's great, outstanding," Bodenhamer says by phone from Belton, Texas.

The contrast between his Christmas this year and that of the 134,000 troops still in Iraq couldn't be more stark. In Iraq, the troops are surrounded by hardship and a frenzy of violence. Back home, the frenzy is one of excess: shoppers battling for parking spaces in malls, snapping up everything from flat-panel TVs to the latest video games......

"If the daily death toll continues at this rate, sometime on Christmas Day a U.S. soldier will die in Iraq and, with his or her death, more U.S. troops will have been killed in Iraq than all the people lost on 9/11 (2,973)." frankly the comparison of the two "numbers" is meaningless. go have another egg nog, MM, the no-fat kind. as for me, nothing screams Chrsitmas like watching that cult-classic, "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" being played nearly non-stop on TV. wow. what were those writers on when they conceived that. And worse, the production values of the movie made the writing seem like Masterpiece Theatre. Perhaps I'll dream of "Santa Claus Conquers the Terrorists" in lieu of visions of sugar plums tonight. In the paper Mark Perry said that a lot of these millionaires are likely working class people. There are people at GM that can make $100,000 a year. If you invest $10,000 a year for 30 years at 10% return you should have about a 1.8 million dollar nest egg. Even at $5,000 a year for 30 years at 10% you should have $900,000 plus a 100,000 home would put you at a net worth over over 1 million dollars. For being such a big GM area it seems like we should have a lot more millionaires.

REAL PROBLEM: Sheriff Pickell needs to try to find out how all the guns and drugs are coming into Genesee County instead of worrying about what is going on in the Flint School District. And Mr. Leyton needs to stop plea bargaining with these gangsters and prosecuting them for murders, instead of letting them off the hook with a slap on the hand so they won't be out on the street in four years to kill again.

Don't link Poplar to Dems

FLINT JOURNAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR
MUNDY TOWNSHIP
THE FLINT JOURNAL FIRST EDITIONMonday, December 25, 2006
JOURNAL READER

I agree with William Henke ["Poplar Dems' Problem," Your Views, Dec. 11, Page A10] in his supposition that Flint Councilwoman Jackie Poplar was guilty of a huge ethical lapse, if not a criminal offense, when she demanded a contribution to her scholarship fund in exchange for her vote in transferring liquor licenses.

However, I don't think Henke's partisanship references are appropriate or necessary. They are divisive as most partisanship finger-pointing is. Whatever party, this woman is dead-on guilty and she knows it. Her self-defense is antagonistic and inflammatory as well. She is supposed to be a role model for her constituents who do not live in the "silver slipper" as she referred to wealthier zones in the area.

Ironically and sadly enough, the poor people that Poplar represents are often those most in need of role models exhibiting integrity and honor.

Poplar is teaching her people that the ends justify the means, regardless of ethics or rules. What a leader, what a role model.

Some Christmas Pudding from Michael Moore
December 24, 2006
Dear friends,
What better way to get the Christmas dinner conversation going than with some fun facts!
This is the first of THREE Christmases left under President George W. Bush. THREE.
Ok, that's not too cheery. Let me try again.
If the daily death toll continues at this rate, sometime on Christmas Day a U.S. soldier will die in Iraq and, with his or her death, more U.S. troops will have been killed in Iraq than all the people lost on 9/11 (2,973).
On second thought, skip the politics for a day and just enjoy the pie.
Merry Christmas to each of you, and peace on earth, wherever we Americans have dropped in.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Nothing happened to the pay gap from the mid-1950s to the late '70s. Then the '80s stood out as a period of sharp increases in women's pay. And it's much less impressive after that." - FRANCINE D. BLAU, a Cornell economist, on gender differences in pay. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/24/business/24gap.html?th&emc=th

Clinton, Obama Clearing The Field Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), trading on star power, the capacity to raise tens of millions of dollars with relative ease and an ability to dominate media attention, are rewriting the script of the 2008 Democratic presidential campaign, driving potential rivals...

"The Democrats would dearly love to elect the first woman or black president. Given that, it's going to be tough to run an insurgent campaign against these people."
Democratic strategist Anita Dunn cautioned against assumptions that the Democratic race is largely going to be a contest among Clinton, Obama and Edwards, who leads the polls in Iowa.

"One of the reasons for elections is that you don't know at this point how things are going to play out," she said. "History teaches us that the front-runners usually win the nomination, but front-runners often stumble -- and that gives an opportunity to someone who is well positioned."

University of Michigan Study on Teen Drug Use

Posted: Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 5:25 PM
(AP) -- WASHINGTON (AP) - Fewer teenagers are using illegal drugs and alcohol, but a new government survey says they may be abusing legal drugs instead. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has released its annual survey, and the findings offer a mix of good news and bad.

It finds a small but growing number of teens are popping prescription painkillers like OxyContin and Vicodin as well as stimulants such as Ritalin. Over-the-counter medicines like cough syrup are also being abused, with one in 14 high school seniors saying they used cold medicine to get high "fairly recently." The study was conducted by the University of Michigan.

Chris Martin is currently receiving $1077. PER WEEK for 40 hrs through a grant with Flint schools as a parent program coordinator. Most parent faciltators get 15 hrs per wk. at a much lower rate- title I funds. He may or may not still be an appointee of the Mayor making a large amount. Was appointed to the water dept. at first then at Haskell. Don't know if he is still on city payroll. I have never distrusted a person so much in all my days. I call him CANCER- as I am a survivor of cancer you may start to understand the depth of my watchfullness for him to rear his ugly head and cause chaos. Nuff said, RAP

Dietzel said someone stole the suit on December 21st, along with several gift cards, right out of his car while he was shopping at the Fashion Square Mall. He found the top of the Jeep's door pried open and his $400 Santa suit gone. All the thief left were his candy canes.

-What is the Laundry Room?

"The Laundry Room" talk show, of YouTube fame, gears up for its hour-long 2006 Year End Special featuring a viewer-initiated question and answer session with a panel of 2007 Flint Michigan mayoral candidates, council members, and other prominent guests.

FLINT, MI (December 21, 2006) – FlintTalk.com, Flint, Michigan’s
growing public discussion forum, announces the 2006 "Laundry Room Year-End Special
" hosted by "Larry & John."

The show will be directed by Shawn Chittle of New York-based production
company Roscoe Van Zandt Films, and will be assisted by Steve Myers,
a producer at The Laundry Room and founder of Flinttalk.com

The show will open with folk singer Jud Caswell from Brunswick, Maine
and will feature an entertaining, packed show with skits, street
interviews, interviews with political figures, local activists and
talk radio personalities.

The highlight of the year-end show will be exclusive interviews with
emerging 2007 Flint mayoral candidates, some of which are making their
debut appearances in major media.

The show is scheduled for taping in late December at The Lunch Studio,
a downtown Flint cafe and meeting place. The show will air on YouTube
and released on limited edition DVD.

"Larry" Crucetti, a truck driver, and "John" Wilson, a professional
student at Michigan State University, found themselves natural talk
show hosts and facilitators. Larry provides on-the-spot direction and
structure, including his his brazen, from-the-hip opinions, while John
provides perspective from the college educated demographic and takes a
more analytical approach. The show is produced by Steve Myers.

The Laundry Room is an emerging force in the widespread social
phenomenon of personal and political expression, as told in Time
Magazine’s cover story, "Person of the Year: You." Larry says, "If
more people go ahead and do something like [a YouTube show], just
think of the conversations that could be had."

One of the angles of the show is holding public officials accountable
and reports on breaking events in the Flint Michigan political
landscape as they unfold. The Laundry Room acts as a watchdog for
political corruption and abuse of power and is the ultimate display of
voter empowerment. Larry and John have dubbed themselves "equal
opportunity voters" and they encourage concerned citizens to get
involved and voice their opinions on their Hotline at (810) 471-4252,
which is open 24 hours a day.

The Laundry Room will be the first to interview Flint mayoral
candidates Dale Weighill, Norman Bryant, and Adam Ford. Flint council
Members Sandy Hill and Ehren Gonzales are scheduled to appear as is
Ryan Eashoo, Chairman of the Flint Historic District Commission, who
met with resistance when he attempted to enter Michael Moore into his
high school’s Hall of Fame. The entire affair was covered nationally.
In the end the school chose to close the Hall of Fame rather than
admit Mr. Moore. Other notable guests included radio host John Roman
from Supertalk 1570’s "Roman on the Radio", Flint attorney Terry
Bankert, and former Flint District Attorney Robert Leonard.

About The Laundry Room:
The Laundry Room, produced by Steve Myers, is the only recurring web-based talk show
in the Flint area. In its brief two-month history, The
Laundry Room has broadcast a total 151 shows, each averaging 10-20
minutes. The shows have logged over 10,000 views on YouTube.com. Fans
from all over the world call into the show from places like Australia,
and coast to coast representation from New York City and Los Angeles.
Larry and John are Citizen Journalists for ManiaTV.com and were recently interviewed on
the 1570 AM SuperTalk "Roman on the Radio"

The show is named after the room where its concept was born—in the
laundry room of Larry Crucetti’s East Side Flint, Michigan home. It
was there that Larry discovered YouTube and was inspired to propose the use of an
Internet video forum as a tool of accountability for all public employees.
As a step in that direction, he resolved to provide a venue for dialog that can affect
positive change in society.

About FlintTalk.com:
Flint Michigan native Steve Myers created FlintTalk.com after seeing
an urgent need for a web-based forum for citizens of the Flint community to voice their
political opinions and views.

About Roscoe Van Zandt Films:
Shawn G. Chittle is a Flint Michigan native and Executive Producer at
Rosce Van Zandt Films in New York City. He is currently producing
several documentaries and dramatic short films in various stages of
development, many of which revolve around Flint as it faces its new,
post-General Motors reality in the 21st Century.

We have a problem, on occassion I am consumed with our lack of intergovnmental coordination, leadership plans and a lack of true leadership.

I am convinced there is a plan that will work and a leader that understands it, can mobilize the community and can make it work.

So to the Flint Journal it is good our economy can produce millionairs.

And to the millionaires Merry CHRISTmas and a happy prosperous new year.
To the working middle class that has not abandoned Flint hang in there get active we can save our families, occupations and this town.

To those in economic harms way, this is a giving community look around and ask for help, we will be there for you if we can.

MICHIGAN

(TV-5) -- Hundreds of workers at GM and Delphi are parting ways. On December 22nd, outgoing Delphi workers in Mid-Michigan gathered to wish each other well on their new lives as retirees.

Some employees have created a unique bond with each other. Hugs, handshakes and one last goodbye, is how many Delphi veterans said farewell to each other. For more than three decades they worked side by side - during the good and not so good times.

Yes, they were co-workers but over the years they became much more than that. Some fell in love and got married. Some became the best of friends. But each of them say they're going to miss the people they worked with.

Together for thirty years, they have become a family and while they won't see each other everyday - like family - they will gather on the holidays to talk about those good old days.
Some of those retirees will stay on the job for a few months training incoming workers on their new jobs.

The State of Michignan requires every individual to make every effort to retreat be fore using force until you are either in your bedroom, or your place of business.

I bring this up because of a recent event that happened at my home. Three obviously drunk individuals were walking past my home one night. They were hollaring profanities and such. (no big deal)

Then, one of them started harrasing a woman warming up her car. calling her "bitch, hoar, ..." He then started yelling "thats my car!! Get out of my car!! I'll kill you bitch" It was obviously not his car as his freinds laughed as they held him back. They kept telling him to "quit playing." He then turned towards me and yelled "you want some?"

This continued for about 3~4 minutes. e said "I know where you live, I'll kill you and your whole family" This is when I pulled the hammer back on my pistol. I never showed it, or even said a word back to him.

I called the police, and ofcourse they arrived late enough to completly miss the whole thing. The problem I have is, I believe him when he threatens my wife and 4 mo. old son. Yet, I have to wait until he breaks into my house, follows me up the stairs, and into my bedroom. I question weather or not I would let him past the front door. Also, there are other concerns. What could I've done if he attacked the woman?

My bedrooms on the second floor; what if he started a fire on the first? My question is, when should I be allowed to use force against a threat to me and my family?
