WHERE IS OUR US POPULATION HEADED?

Doubly Hispanic; vastly more Asian; equivalently African American; much less white. Overall: Older.[TPI]

How will this affect our policy decisions?[trb]
Demographers have long monitored U.S. census data in an effort to project current trends forward, providing a snapshot of the future that could help lay out policy questions facing the country.[TCT]

This data allows us to budget for education, health care and other social needs.[trb]

The number of Hispanics in the United States will triple by 2050 and represent nearly 30 percent of the population if current trends continue, according to a report released yesterday. [TWP]

Politically this emerging should shift our discussion on immigration policy. [trb]
The study by the nonpartisan, Washington-based http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Pew+Research+Center?tid=informlinePew Research Center also found that nearly one in five Americans will be foreign-born in 2050, compared with about one in eight today. Asian Americans, representing 5 percent of the population today, are expected to boost their share to 9 percent. [TWP]

This demographic shift will affect voting pattern. Which party will get the immigration vote. Will immigrants support the political party whose leader has a foreign sounding name?[trb]

Blacks are projected to maintain their current 13 percent share. Non-Hispanic whites will still be the nation's largest group, the report says, but would drop from 67 percent of U.S. residents to 47 percent. [TWP]

How will changing demographics change our public civil rights policies in the U.S..[trb]

WHAT AN IRONY!

What such an outcome could portend, other analysts have said, is a nation riven politically between older, whiter, voting retirees who are increasingly supported by a younger, darker, working population that, as immigrants, may be disproportionately ineligible to vote.[TNYT]
Its in the self interest of older whites to politically align with the immigrant populations and their American ethnic voting clusters.[trb]

In the future "...the country's needs and ethnic identity will be far more complex, predicted Jeffrey Passel, who co-wrote the Pew report."[TCT]

Jan Ting, a former assistant commissioner with the Immigration and Naturalization Service who teaches a course on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugees at Temple University's Beasley School of Law, thinks the most stunning finding of the report is its population projection. [TPI]

"The most troubling aspects," he said, "are the implications . . . on schools, the notion of universal health, our criminal-justice system, our infrastructure, our environment." [TPI]

WILL ANTI IMMIGRATION INTERESTS USE THIS REPORT TO CREATE NEW BARRIERS TO IMMIGRATION

Ting interpreted the report as a reason to crack down on illegal immigration. The report makes no distinction between documented and undocumented entry. [TPI]

"If we can address the illegal portion and reduce it somehow, we can put the brakes on this sort of growth, and hopefully not get to the scenario" that Pew outlines, he said. [TPI]

Overall, by 2050 the U.S. population is projected to increase by 47 percent, from 296 million in 2005 to 438 million. Newly arriving immigrants would account for 47 percent of the rise, and
their U.S.-born children and grandchildren would represent another 35 percent. [TWP]

Authors of the study, which roughly tracks similar analyses by the http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/U.S.+Census+Bureau?tid=informlineCensus Bureau and other sources, cautioned that their findings are projections based on immigration and demographic trends that may change. [TWP]

There is some debate concerning the methodology of PEW.[trb]

IMMIGRATION

Immigrants, particularly Hispanics, will play an increasingly important role in the work force. A combination of the aging of baby boomers and low birth rates among non-Hispanic whites will lead to a decrease in their percentage in the work force, from 68 percent in 2005 to 45 percent in 2050. Immigration and higher birth rates will see Hispanics, now 14 percent of the work force, increase to 31 percent.[THC]

WILL A QUOTA SYSTEM RETURN?

Nonetheless, the report offers an intriguing picture of the possible long-term effects of the immigration surge that began after 1965, when Congress abolished a quota system that had nearly ended immigration from non-European countries since the 1920s.[TWP]

Because of a declining birthrate among U.S.-born women, immigrants and their U.S.-born children and grandchildren already account for most of the nation's population increase over the past several decades. The study projects that by 2025, the foreign-born share of the population will surpass the peak recorded during the waves of immigration that occurred between 1860 and 1920, when foreign-born residents represented as much as 15 percent of the U.S. population. [TWP]

THE RISE IN IMMIGRATION WILL HAVE SHORT TERM COSTS AND LONG TERM GAIN.

He acknowledged education costs can increase as immigrants bring their children with them or start families here, but said the eventual payoff for the economy was worth the investment. Health care costs also can increase initially, but stabilize as immigrants become part of the mainstream work force.[THC]

Some groups felt left out. The Caribbean for instance . One Caribbean Newspaper questions why their population was left out of the study.[TCN]

SOME IMMIGRANTs COME TO THE UNITED UNITED STATES WITH THE ILLUSION OF OUR HORN OF PLENTY, OTHERS ARE RUNNING FOR THEIR LIVES.

I'm an innumerate, but the figures on this -- the saddest story of our Iraq debacle -- are so large that even I can do the necessary computations. The population of the United States is now
http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/thenation/cm_thenation/storytext/15283420/26293427/SIG=120e6nsn6/*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States
JUST OVER $300,000 the population of Iraq at the time of the U.S. invasion was perhaps in the 26-27 million range. Between March 2003 and today, a number of reputable sources place the total of Iraqis who have fled their homes -- those who have been displaced internally and those who have gone abroad -- at between 4.5 million and 5 million individuals. If you take that still staggering lower figure, approximately one in six Iraqis is either a refugee in another country or an internally displaced person. [YN]

DOUBLING SENIOR POPULATION

But the study's authors said that immigration will do little to offset the more than doubling of the nation's elderly population as baby boomers age. By 2050, people older than 65 will make up 19 percent of the population, compared with 12 percent in 2005, while the share of working-age people will shrink from 63 percent to 58 percent. [TWP]

Since I am about to become a senior I support getting immigrants education, health care and jobs so they can work pay taxes and support me.[trb]

DEPENDENCY RATION

This translates into a sharp rise in the "dependency ratio" of working-age people, compared with the number of young and elderly. Today, there are about 59 children or elderly people per 100 working-age adults. By 2050, that figure is expected to increase to 72 dependents per 100 working-age adults. [TWP]

Well its like having to support public schools when you have no school age children. Its just your turn.[trb]

SOCIAL SECURITY

Though advocates of immigration have suggested that the newcomers can help offset the pressure boomers put on Social Security, the report indicates that even if immigration were reduced by 50 percent, the dependency ratio would change only from 72 dependents to 75 per 100 working-age adults. [TWP]

Speaking for the boomers, we are for this.[trb]

Those who oppose allowing immigration to continue at its current pace interpreted the findings as vindication. "These numbers underline the fact that immigration is not a solution to the aging of the population," said http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/Mark+Krikorian?tid=informlineMark Kirkorian of the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors further limits on immigration. "And then we need to ask ourselves if we want the 100 million more people immigration will bring. Do you want 80 million more cars on the road, or 40 million homes occupying what's now open space?" [TWP]

John Fonte, a senior fellow at Washington's Hudson Institute, where he directs the Center for American Common Culture, said he believes the nation is experiencing "an assimilation crisis" that could intensify by mid-century. [TPI]

If Pew's projections are correct, he said, "we should get even more serious about ending anti-assimilation measures." [TPI]

"We have bilingual ballots. We have bilingual education. We have dual citizenship voting. All of these things are clashing" with what it means to have an American identity, he said. [TPI]

Wrong, we have an identity as the melting pot of the world. [trb]

As for the policy implications of the Pew report, "the levels of immigration ought to be connected to how well we are doing with assimilation. Since we are not doing so well right now, I would decrease it." [TPI]

I think we are doing great at assimilation. More educational resources are needed.[trb]

MOST OF US WILL NOT ADMIT HOW VALUABLE THE IMMIGRANTS ARE TO THE ECONOMY.

"This is something we are seeing in Connecticut," West Hartford economist Ron Van Winkle said. "Almost all the population increase we have is due to international migration."[THC]He described the state as having a "mature, slow-growing economy," and without the infusion of immigrants "we'd have a smaller economy, we'd have less wealth and we'd have jobs leaving the state because they couldn't be filled."[THC]

At a news conference to announce the report yesterday, co-authors D'Vera Cohn and Jeffrey S. Passel declined to draw policy conclusions. They also noted that even if their projections are accurate, the social implications may be different by 2050: Given the high rate of intermarriage between Latinos and members of other ethnic groups, many descendants of today's Latinos may not even identify themselves as such. [TWP]

Varsovia Fernandez, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce - 300 business owners and Latino professionals - said the Pew study seemed like a good argument for committing more educational resources to Hispanics, whose high school graduation rates are below 50 percent. [TPI]

"What it tells me is that we really need to giddy-up and start paying more attention. [TPI]
"If the workforce of the future is going to be a lot more Hispanics," she said, "we need to do a better job of educating them."[TPI]

A few conclusions have become clear: Latino and Asian populations are rapidly increasing because of both immigration and birth rates in the U.S.; non-Hispanic whites, meanwhile, are on their way to becoming a minority.[TCT]

It's cool to care again![CBS]

Yesterday there was a brief TV news story on the liberalization of young voters from conservative families. A Google on Young Voters found the following.
It's a common adage among politicians and pundits: Young people don't vote. But after years of low youth turnout, that trend may be changing, if the 2008 primary results are any indication.[CBS]

Young voters are on a roll this election season. They rolled right through Super Tuesday in record-breaking numbers and are poised for a remarkable, maybe election-altering, turnout in November.[KCC]

One month into this presidential primary season, the under-30 set suddenly is present and accounted for at the voting booth. [TDMN]

Political experts are calling this election the year of the youth vote--a race where voters under 30 are proving to be a crucial component for political victory. [KS]

This election year is also one of the first in which candidates have made a concerted effort to target and reach out to young voters, Morgenstern said.[CBS]

FACE BOOK, YOU TUBE, MYSPACE.....

This election cycle will be a key testing ground for the networking sites to show their political capability. Candidates should start using YouTube to their maximum abilities by posting pithy videos of their stances and lives. They need to market themselves aggressively on Myspace and Facebook and post comments. The politicians of the USA could intrigue the youth by making the political process smaller than it is currently. Chances are, the only glimpse you will ever receive of a president will be from the TV. If things can get shrink back to the days of the candidate meeting the folks and kissing babies, that will snag the youth. Their campaign staff can actively make the web pages friendly to users and to potential supporters.[H]

"This is an entirely new generation of young people," said Heather Smith of Rock the Vote, a nationwide advocacy group. "They’re finding their voice in the political process now and realizing that when they do turn out, campaigns pay attention to them."[KCC]

This year, presidential candidates have been working to woo young voters to caucuses and primaries through the use of new technologies provided by the internet as well as text messaging. Social networking and videos posted on YouTube have gotten young voters involved, which caused record-shattering youth turnouts in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primaries. And somewhat unusual appeals have also surfaced. Amber Lee Ettinger, better known as "Obama Girl", has emerged as a YouTube and music video sensation with her musical tributes to Barack Obama called "I've Got a Crush on Obama" and "Super Obama Girl."[WU]

The potential clout of younger voters has long been ballyhooed. The numbers show they might finally be cashing in, politically.[KCC]

While college students don't regularly watch the news, or read the newspaper, their universal attachment to the internet ensures access to political appeals; they can catch a candidate's speeches and debates on YouTube. They also share their thoughts though social networking groups on sites like Facebook and Myspace, which bring people together and ultimately can receive billions of hits per day. [WU]

Voter turnout tripled among in the Missouri primary, according to a University of Maryland research center. That’s compared with the 2000 presidential primary, the last time similar data was available.[KCC]

While Obama may have been the first among this year's candidates to reach out to young voters, others like Hillary Clinton quickly caught onto the trend and launched her "Students for Hillary" campaign at high schools and college campuses across California using her daughter, Chelsea, as the campaign's icon. Analysts attribute Clinton's strong showing on Super Tuesday, at least in part, to that effort.[WU]

Generation "Y", Generation "Next" or the Digital Generation will have a tremendous impact on the United States. People of high school through the Grad School level have been exposed to electronics for years. I remember that my first encounter with the Internet was in Jr. High, and through college, I have remained an ardent computing individual. I am not the exception, but more likely part of the rule. The young generations are using the Internet and technology more widely than others.[H]

YOUNG VOTER TURNOUT AT 21 % UP FROM 7%

Nearly 191,000 young voters cast ballots in the state on Tuesday, compared with 71,000 in the 2000 primary. Turnout among young people was a woeful 7 percent in 2000 and hit 21 percent Tuesday.[KCC]

The numbers — and the zeal — are expected to grow through the November election.[KCC]

According to a recent article in The Buffalo News,David Burstein, who has recently released a documentary called "18 in '08" said, "What these technologies are doing is they're giving young people an unprecedented amount of power and access to the political process."[WU]

ROCK THE VOTE

Smith said Rock the Vote helped register a half-million young voters in preparation for Super Tuesday and is on track to register more than 2 million this year. Most will vote in November, she said.[KCC]

So far, young voters are playing a strong part in the narrative of this presidential primary season, a trend that started in 2004. Youth voter turnout had declined in all but one presidential election year between 1972, when 18-year-olds first voted and 2000.[KCC]

2004 MARKED A CHANGE

"In 2004, something changed," said Emily Kirby, of the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement. "And again in 2006. Now we’re seeing this a third time with the primaries and caucuses."[KCC]

On Super Tuesday, the "youth vote" also tripled in Georgia and Oklahoma and quadrupled in Tennessee, Kirby said. Earlier, Florida and Iowa also saw a tripling in youth turnout, although not every state has had increases. Kirby said her center can’t crunch numbers from the Kansas Democratic caucus Tuesday or Saturday’s Republican caucus because of a lack of exit poll information.[KCC]

THE UNDER 30 VOTER

What’s going on with under-30 voters?[KCC]

Technology — specifically the ease and allure of the Internet — is part of what’s fueling participation.[KCC]

Meghan Whelan of Kansas City, Kan., did her part in upping the numbers, and she doesn’t plan to stop now. She’s a Barack Obama supporter and is using her MySpace page to keep 240 "friends" informed.[KCC]

MY SPACE

"It’s my own MySpace campaign," said Whelan, 26. "I talk about how Barack Obama inspires me and how we need to show people that as young voters we do care, that we need to go against the stereotypes."[KCC]

YOU TUBE

Then there was the YouTube video called "Yes We Can," a musical adaptation of an Obama speech. Made by a member of the Black Eyed Peas, the video has been watched more than 2 million times in the last week.[KCC]

"It was really powerful, so I made sure I put it up for everybody to watch," Whelan said. "We don’t necessarily have the money to donate, but we can put time and energy into this."[KCC]

YOUNG REPUBLICANS

Nathan Lipsky, 17, was one of hundreds of Kansans waiting in line Saturday to get into the Republican caucus at the Matt Ross Community Center in Overland Park. He is eligible to vote because he will be 18 come Election Day in November.[KCC]

His choice: John McCain.[KCC]

"I like his stand on foreign policy, and I think he’s the best candidate for the party," said Lipsky, a student at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in Overland Park.[KCC]

Farther back in the line, Lauren Cantril, 18, of Overland Park said she dragged her mother to the caucuses with her. Cantril said she’s for Mike Huckabee because of his anti-abortion stand.[KCC]

She also was motivated by how she regards the Democratic candidates. "I don’t like the Democratic people," Cantril said. "I just don’t believe in what they stand for."[KCC]

INCREASED NUMBERS

The 18-to-29-year-olds have something else: a big — and growing — head count.[KCC]

The year 1990 marked the highest number of births since the baby boom, which officially began in 1946, and those babies are turning 18 this year. Some 44 million people between 18 and 29 are eligible to vote in 2008, according to Rock the Vote, the young voter advocacy group.[KCC]

UNDER 30 ARE 25% OF THE POSSIBLE VOTERS

"That’s nearly a quarter of the electorate," said Smith, executive director, "and there’s a huge surge just waiting at the gates. By 2012, it will be nearly a third of the electorate."[KCC]

The strength of the youth vote is tipping elections, she said. An estimated 70,000 young voters cast ballots for Obama in Missouri’s Democratic primary, which he won by just 10,000 votes.[KCC]

IMPACT OF SOCIAL NETWORKING

Besides online factors — social networking sites, blogs, candidate Web sites, YouTube and so on — here are some of the reasons experts cited for increases in youth voting:[KCC]

•In the 2004 election, campaigns began hiring youth directors, who were charged with pursuing this untapped pool of voters.[KCC]

•Campaigns altered tactics, using more canvassing and other one-on-one appeals. Research shows that the more personal the appeal the better, especially when one young voter contacts another.[KCC]

•Contested elections feel more important, especially to young voters who are more likely to question whether their votes matter.[KCC]

75% OF THE YOUNG VOTERS THINK THE COUNTRY IS GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION

•This year’s issues seem particularly relevant to young voters. In a recent Time poll, 75 percent of under-30 Americans felt the country was going in the wrong direction, with particular concern about jobs, health-care affordability and the war in Iraq.[KCC]

YOUNG VOTERS ARE GOING FOR OBAMA OR HUCKLABEE

•Obama is attracting young voters. In most states so far this primary season, Obama has outpolled Hillary Clinton among young voters.[KCC]

In Missouri, the youth vote was 65 percent for Obama and 30 percent for Clinton. Among Republicans, 43 percent of young people chose Mike Huckabee, compared with 27 percent for John McCain, 18 percent for Mitt Romney and 9 percent for Ron Paul.[KCC]

Exit polls from South Carolina and Iowa show that Obama received more than half of the youth vote helping him to win both states. Last spring, Obama hired Hans Riemer, his youth vote director, which benefited Obama the most out of all the other candidates, according to an article posted by the Morris Daily Herald.[WU]

On the Republican's side, Mike Huckabee won Iowa, because of his "young evangelicals," a part of his campaign called "Huck's Army," which netted 37 % of young voters. Young voters also helped John McCain win New Hampshire, and to some extent South Carolina[WU]

Conversations with young caucus-goers and voters last week affirmed the analysts’ conclusions.[KCC]

Sara Parton and Annie Fulsom, both 17, were among the youthful Obama supporters who participated in the caucus at Mill Valley High School in Shawnee. They will turn 18 before the general election.[KCC]

Both said they feel well-informed about the presidential candidates. They read the candidates’ Web sites and watched debates. Parton likes Obama’s stands on health care and Social Security. Fulsom said she’s also drawn by his personal and political skills.[KCC]

"I like how he can move people with his speeches and how he can talk about change," Fulsom said.[KCC]

Laurie Gallagher, a 19-year-old University of Kansas freshman, said many students are fired up by Obama but also by, what they consider, the mistakes of the Bush administration. To stay informed, she joined a Facebook group called Barack Chalk Jayhawks.[KCC]

Mary Opie of Blue Springs, who was a Romney supporter and now undecided, said the wide-open race and the weight of current issues are drawing in the under-30 crowd.[KCC]

A study from last year at the Students' Public Interest Research Group, which works to turn out votes nationwide among college students, found that sending a text message asking students to vote a day before an election resulted in a 4 % increase in student turnout at the polls. [WU]

My generation wants people who are real. Using the Internet can help bring about that sense of reality to the generations. The youth can be brought into politics, through the collaborative force of a candidate being honest, real and open-minded. These things can be achieved through the alternate world of cyberspace. [H]

"They jst really need to appeal to (young people)," she said. "They have to feel a connection with (a politician) - I think that's really important." [CBS]

But Mr. Obama is developing a new political calculus, one that doesn't depend only on old-timers. And if early results are any indication, voting might actually be cool. [TDMN]

"It's cool to care again," he said. "It's fun and interesting and exciting."[CBS]

Democratic Presidents are the only ones to get the economy right in your life time, past and future.[trb]

Here is something to think about. This economic problem is about debt. Since Reagan the country and the people in it have been borrowing huge amounts of money to keep things going. (Except for the years that Clinton balanced the budget and was paying back some of the debt.)[dj]

As America digs its way out of the Bush Depression quick fixes and long term solutions should be adopted But we need new leadership to do that, our President is incapable.[trb]

“Worried White House aides paint a portrait of a man on the edge, increasingly wary of those who disagree with him and paranoid of a public that no longer trusts his policies in Iraq or at home. ‘It reminds me of the Nixon days,’ says a longtime GOP political consultant with contacts in the White House. ‘Everybody is an enemy; everybody is out to get him. That’s the mood over there.’[chb]

We get out of this problem by realizing we are at economic war not with international corporations but with the national soverinties that own them, control them or give in to them by activie policies that use their national wealth and political control to subsidize the very industries that have raped our national economy. Are you angry yet?[trb]

...a sound long-term strategy must include an aggressive plan to rebuild America's manufacturing base. [dnc]

I wonder why no one has pointed out the real reason the Republicans filibustered the "stimulus bill" this week? They blocked an expansion of food stamps, an extension of unemployment benefits, assistance for disabled veterans, help for seniors and a boost for renewable energy. [dj]

The republicans will protect wealth while throwing away human life.[trb]

Other industrial nations treasure their manufacturing industries and have developed policies to create and preserve industrial jobs. [dnc]

Please ask the following people What have you done in the last five years to protect our domestic automobile industry” Ask-Omama, Clinton. Stabenaw, Levin, Grandholm, and Dale Kildee.[trb]

GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH CONFIRMS MASSIVE CHINESE ENERGY SUBSIDIES TO STEEL INDUSTRY[aam]

According to a new report commissioned by the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), the Chinese government has exponentially boosted its steel output over the last three years through massive, trade-distorting energy subsidies. Total energy subsidies to Chinese steel from 2000 to mid-year 2007 reached $27.11 billion. Despite China’s entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2002, energy subsidies grew, totaling $25.07 billion through mid-year 2007. [aam]

The Chinese as countries have through out history, exept for the U.S. today, have always held it to be in their national interest to protect and subsidize their companies involved in international trade. We bought one half of globalization hook line and sinker i.e. there is a world economy. We missed the second part which is that countries have to be watchful and protect their economic borders and subsidive their industries so that they can compete and dominate internationlly.[trb]

These energy subsidies include supports for thermal and coking coal, electricity, and natural gas.“Chinese subsidies exist, they are enormous and they are shaping the global steel market,” said the report’s author, Usha C. V. Haley, Ph.D.[aam]

Do we subsidize industry?[trb]

China has identified steel as a strategic industry, and both the central and provincial governments have decided to ramp up steel production with massive subsidies that have now been confirmed.”China is the largest producer and consumer of steel in the world, accounting for 40 percent of the global market. [aam]

2005 IMPORTER TO 2006 EXPORTER! WHY DID CHINESE GOVERNMENTAL SUBSIDIES GO UP 1365%? TO KICK OUR BUTT![trb]

Much has changed for China’s steel industry in the last 5 years. In 2005, China went from a net steel importer to a steel exporter. In 2006, China became the largest steel exporter in the world by volume, up from fifth largest in 2005. This enormous increase in production has come at a cost for U.S. manufacturing; more than 1.8 million U.S. jobs have been displaced since China joined the WTO, according to the Economic Policy Institute”[aam]

“This shift from a net importer to the largest exporter in a span of only two or three years is staggering,” said Dr. Haley. “Our analysis shows that energy subsidies have a very strong correlation with Chinese steel exports. In fact, the connection is so clear that, essentially, it’s possible to almost perfectly predict China’s steel exports from its energy subsidies.”[aam]

In her report, Dr. Haley notes that Chinese energy subsidies fell in 2002 and 2003, after China joined the WTO. However, the subsidies surged in 2004 and have continued to grow exponentially. [aam]

From 2000 to 2006, China’s total energy subsidies to steel grew by 1365 percent. In 2007, energy subsidies to Chinese steel are estimated at approximately $15.7 billion, showing a 3800 percent increase since 2000.[aam]

WE NEED THE INTERVENTION OF CONGRESS THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A FREE MARKET![trb]

“These subsidies need to be urgently addressed and remedied by Congress and the Administration,” said Scott Paul, AAM’s executive director. “They’re typical of China’s brazen subsidization as well as illegal practices like currency manipulation. China shipped 5.4 million tons of steel to the U.S. in 2006—more than double the amount in 2005. Washington needs to take strong action to correct this one-sided approach to trade which has given Beijing an unfair competitive advantage while harming American businesses and workers.”[aam]

WE HAVE LET OUR WORKING MEN AND WOMEN DOWN.[trb]

Here in the U.S., we've done little or nothing while entire industries like toys, textiles and televisions have moved offshore. Which means a sizable chunk of the tens of billions of dollars that Congress is set to pump into the economy will wind up stimulating new sales and jobs overseas, instead of here in America. [dnc]

LACK OF GOVERNMENTAL POLICY HAS CRUSH AMERICAN INDUSTRY THAT HAS THROWN MILLIONS INTO POVERTY. IN THE SHORT TERM WE MUST HELP WORKING MEN AND WOMEN.[trb]

There is near universal agreement that extending unemployment insurance and enhanced food stamp benefits is the fastest, most effective way to stimulate the economy. These benefits put money directly in the hands of those who need it -- and who will spend it directly into our struggling economy. [dnc]

WE NEED HELP! CONGRESS WHAT ARE YOU DOING TOMORROW , NEXT WEEK, NEXT MONTH!?[trb]

The head of the UAW says last year’s groundbreaking labor deals are not enough to ensure the survival of America’s automotive industry.[FJ08]

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF GOVERNMENTAL INTERVENTION IN THE MARKET! ITS WHAT GOVERNMENTS HAVE ALWAYS DONE.[trb]

Public policy also must change to support manufacturing, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Friday in a speech in Cleveland.[FJ08]

“Unless we take action, we’re going to see a continued decline in manufacturing industries, and the hard work we did to preserve U.S. jobs during our 2007 auto negotiations will be compromised,” Gettelfinger said at the City Club of Cleveland.[FJ08]

He (GETTLEFINGER) also blamed the problems of American manufacturing on the lack of a cohesive national industrial policy to build up American manufacturing, which, he argued, has led to the movement offshore of entire industries.[ccb]

The labor deals signed last year after brief strikes at General Motors and Chrysler allow automakers to pay new workers lower wages to perform “noncore” jobs, give those workers access to a 401(k) retirement program instead of a pension and have new workers pay a larger portion of their health-care expenses.[FJ08]

Fair trade agreements, as opposed to what he said are current free trade policies, would press for a level playing field on issues such as employee and human rights.[ccb]

He, Gettlefinger, added that he was disappointed that the economic stimulus package recently approved by Congress did not included extended unemployment benefits for laid-off workers.[ccb]

As an economic stimulus package moves rapidly through Congress, promising one-time rebates to tens of millions of Americans, legislators should not forget those who need special assistance in these tough times: Every week, 200,000 jobless workers run out of unemployment benefits. [dnc]

TRAINED UNION LABOR CAN COMPETE IN THE WORLD MARKET. THE CHINESE KNOW THIS.[trb]

Gettlefinger also “...stood up for the productivity of union labor and urged the country to adopt a single-payer health care system”.[ccb]

Citing the respected Harbour Report of automotive manufacturing operations, he said, “Trained, experienced, union workers with a voice on the job add value to the manufacturing process.” [ccb]

IF WE DO NOT PROTECT OUR MIDDLE CLASS, AMERICANS WILL SOON BE A RELIC ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE.[trb]

In the long term, we need policies that will raise income for America's workers -- week after week in every paycheck. A worker who receives a one-time rebate can make a one-time purchase. But a worker who receives a pay raise can plan to buy a new car or a new house or to send a child to college. [dnc]

MAKING STUFF WITH AN EDUCATED WORKFORCE HAS ALWAYS WORKED , BUT PRESUMED IS THAT OUR ECONOMIC BORDERS HAVE BEEN DEFENDED BY CONGRESS.....TODAY THOSE ECONOMIC BOARDERS ARE IN SHAMBLES.[trb]

Autos, construction, housing and education for the next generation are long-term drivers of economic growth. But working people's wages are stagnating, middle-class jobs are disappearing -- and with the price of gas near $3 a gallon, we can barely afford to drive our own cars, much less the U.S. economy. [dnc]

We need a sharp turnaround to protect and expand good-paying middle class jobs. The increase in the minimum wage passed by the new Democratic majority in Congress in 2006 was a good start. [dnc]

THE QUICK FIX IS TO GET $ IN THE HANDS OF THE CONSUMERS.[trb]

Taxes and unions got us out of the depression. Redistribution of income. Taxes on the rich, the money used to build infrastructure and provide good jobs, and unions to force the corporations to give raises and benefits. In a consumer economy you want more money in the hands of the consumers -- not the rich. [dj]

THE LONG TERM FIX TO TO STRENGTHEN OUR ECONOMIC BORDERS, SUDSIDIZE INDUSTRIES THAT COMPETE INTERNATIONALLY, PROVIDE HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATE OUR WORKFORCE AND THEIR CHILDREN.[trb]
