Quote for the day. “Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain - and most fools do. “ Dale Carnegie

- Good code enforcement protects our investment in our homes.FJ082607 pg A3. Bill Ayre speaking for Mayor Donald Williamson says “..the city has made it a priority”. [fj- Flint Journal]

- As I read the article on Asians lunar race fj08262007 I thought of the future with China as the dominant country in the world and the US reduced in impact to the current status of Peru, Finland, or Germany. Do we want to stop that or is it the natural order as populations increase, and technology disfavors industrial countries? - The UAW labor day celebration offers free or near free family fun while we reflect on the positive impact of organized labor. FJ 0826 2007 pg C3

- Have you noticed that the Flint Journal offers a standing series of idiotic conservative republican columns next to its editorial page. FJ 08 26 2007. I suggest we react to these, I plan on it constrained by time and probably ability.

- Cheny is on the Board of Directors of a think tank Family Security Matters. They said “...the Iraq conquest should be Bushs first step to begin conquering the planet and eventually declaring himself permanent President of the World.” See Chad Swiatcki Column page G2. Thank you, could you join in the editorial page please.

- On page G3 Andrew Heller talks to goofy..how appropriate! - I read the journal editorial on retirements then the want ads and thought: Why can’t a city run a second or third shift for appropriate tasks that used personnel retired from other jurisdictions or its own and reduce cost?

- The Flint Journal ran an old column of Thomas Sowell opposite its editorial page on 8/26/07 . This is my response. Sowells article has not been altered only my comments added with the citation [TRB] August 21, 2007 An Investment in Failure By Thomas Sowell http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2007/08/an_investment_in_failure.html

It is not just in Iraq that the political left has an investment in failure. Domestically as well as internationally, the left has long had a vested interest in poverty and social malaise.

[Is solving poverty an investment or is causing poverty to enrich the wealthy the investment you prefer Mr. Sowell.TRB]

The old advertising slogan, "Progress is our most important product," has never applied to the left.

[ Social progress is the domain of the left, economic progress is the domain of the right we need to be in the middle with both forces creating public policy. But the right often provides no net for those not as economically able. Here is where we differ. TRB]

Whether it is successful black schools in the United States or Third World countries where millions of people have been rising out of poverty in recent years, the left has shown little interest.

[Untrue statement, research should follow, please note this a conclusion with no foundation. Rising Americans out of poverty is more a result of public policy of the left not the right.TRB] Progress in general seems to hold little interest for people who call themselves "progressives." What arouses them are denunciations of social failures and accusations of wrong-doing.

[Wrong, see above. What is being denounced is the failure of conservative republican social policy.TRB] One wonders what they would do in heaven.

[....be accepted.TRB]

The August 18th Issue of the distinguished British magazine "The Economist" reveals the economic progress in Brazil, Argentina, and other Latin American nations that has given a better life to millions of their poorest citizens.

[The right has been in control of this country for a generation. NAFTA and the abandonment of the American middle class by the republicans has helped these countries.TRB]

Some of the economic policies that have led to these results are discussed in "The Economist" but it is doubtful that members of the political left will stampede there to find out what those policies were.

[You have decided to not share these here or possibly do not comprehend the analysis only conviently use the conclusion. TRB]

They have shown no such interest in how tens of millions of people in China and tens of millions of people in India have risen out of poverty within the past generation.

[When the US stopped protecting its boarder economically and allowed these labor pools to decimate the ranks of organized labor the middle class of China and India exploded while ours disappears. Responsible parties are Clinton, Busch ,Cheny ,a lap dog congress and passive labor leadership. TRB]

Despite whatever the left may say, or even believe, about their concern for the poor, their actual behavior shows their interest in the poor to be greatest when the poor can be used as a focus of the left's denunciations of society.

[It is appropriate to critique and give opinions when you are no longer in control such as now, the election of a democratic congress and in the near future election of a democratic president will make us responsible again. Now, you and yours are. TRB]

When the poor stop being poor, they lose the attention of the left. What actions on the part of the poor, or what changes in the economy, have led to drastic reductions in poverty seldom arouse much curiosity, much less celebration.

[Cerebral nonsense. How much do you make off of this column? The left is the protector of the middle class the poor have risen to because ot historic democratic policies. TRB]

This is not a new development in our times. Back in the 19th century, when Karl Marx presented his vision of the impoverished working class rising to attack and destroy capitalism, he was disappointed when the workers grew less revolutionary over time, as their standards of living improved.

[What does this have to do with the price of tea in China or are we reading your default when there is nothing left for you to say, so to speak. Marx is not the foundation of democratic policy.TRB]

At one point, Marx wrote to his disciples: "The working class is revolutionary or it is nothing." Think about that. Millions of human beings mattered to him only in so far as they could serve as cannon fodder in his jihad against the existing society.

[This was a 100 years ago when. TRB]

If they refused to be pawns in his ideological game, then they were "nothing."

[This is the USA not Russia. TRB]

No one on the left would say such things so plainly today, even to themselves. But their actions speak louder than words.

[Conclusion without foundation or logic. TRB]

Blacks are to the left today what the working class were to Marx in the 19th century -- pawns in an ideological game.

[You insult your own race for your economic advantage while you eat from the right wing table. TRB]

Blacks who rise out of poverty are of no great interest to the left, unless the way they do so is by attacking society.

[Ask Obama. TRB]

The poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits since 1994 but the left has shown no more interest in why that is so than they have shown in why many millions of people have risen out of poverty in Latin America or in China and India.

[This make no sense. TRB]

Where progress can be plausibly claimed to be a result of policies favored by the left, then such claims are made.

[We had a middle class that you and yours are decimating. TRB]

A whole mythology has grown up that the advancement of minorities and women in America is a result of policies promoted by the left in the 1960s. Such claims are often based on nothing more substantial than ignoring the history of the progress made prior to 1960.

[? This is attack for the sake of attack. You are partially correct the issues are complicated and cross economic and party labels. I expected more from you. TRB]

Retrogressions in the wake of the policies of the 1960s are studiously ignored -- the runaway crime rates, the disintegration of black families, and the ghetto riots of the 1960s that have left many black communities still barren more than 40 years later.

[The most significant rise in these negative has occurred during the watch of you and yours. To identify who to blame you should look in a mirror.TRB]

Whatever does not advance the left agenda is "nothing."

[The Democratic President with a Democratic Congress will show you what a non conservative republican agenda can accomplish.-TRB a liberal]
