CALL TO CONVENTION? CAUCUS MAY BE FIRST.!Will the millions who voted at the public election in Michigan be disenfranchised because of the decision of Mark Brewer Chairperson of the Michigan Democratic Party? A: YES![TRB]
The 5th Congressional district just mailed its notice to convention to pick the people to go to the National Democratic Party Convention. On the same day we see news that our Governor support re doing the vote! How did we get in this pickel.[trb]
DEMOCRATIC ELEDERS ( NATIVES) ERODE RESPECT FOR DEMOCRATIC PARTY
It's time to declare an electoral Groundhog Day for Florida and Michigan and allow voters there another chance to help choose the Democratic presidential nominee. Ordinarily, this page objects to mulligans, do-overs and last-minute changes that erode respect for the rules of fair play. [la]
Q: What's going on?
A: The Democratic National Committee (DNC) stripped Michigan of its 210 delegates and Florida of its 156 delegates to the party's August convention because the states scheduled their primaries before Feb. 5. The candidates promised not to campaign in those two states. [usa]
THERE IS HOPE TO GIVE THE COMMON DEMOCRATS ( DEAD RABBITS) A VOICE
But there is a way to put the increasingly wacky nominating contest back on track, giving voters a say without rewarding the errant state politicians who broke the rules in the first place. [la]
MARK BREWER STATE DEMOCRATIC CHAIRPERSON DID US WRONG! HE HAS GOT TO GO TO GIVE DEM'S ANY CREDIBILITY!
All sane Democrats now rue the day that Florida and Michigan officials decided to flout party rules and hold their primaries earlier than ever in history. The contests that were held were manifestly undemocratic (Barack Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan), and National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has rightly refused to seat the two states' delegates at the convention.[la]
Florida and Michigan moved up their contests to protest the party's decision to allow Iowa and New Hampshire to go first, followed by South Carolina and Nevada.[usa]
"The rules were set a year and a half ago," Dean said. "Florida and Michigan voted for them, then decided that they didn't need to abide by the rules. Well, when you are in a contest you do need to abide by the rules. Everybody has to play by the rules out of respect for both campaigns and the other 48 states."[usa]
As Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama competed through more than 40 contests over the past two months, Michigan and Florida remained on the sidelines, barred from participating in the Democratic presidential nomination process because they violated party rules. Now, with neither candidate likely to win enough delegates to capture the nomination, the question is whether the two states will end up deciding the race by holding do-over contests this spring. [w]
Now that the race to the nomination looks to be a photo finish, Florida and Michigan officials say they'd like to hold the contests again -- if someone else pays. If they do so before June 29, their delegations could be properly seated under existing party rules -- and could participate as they should in what may well be a brokered convention.[la]
MONEY,POWER AND KEEPING THE NATIVES IN POWER!
Money is the stumbling block. Guesstimates of the cost of a do-over range from $5 million per state for a mail-in contest to $18 million or new elections. But who said democracy should be cheap? That Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $3 million in a single day following her victories in Texas and Ohio shows how passionately many Americans feel about this presidential race.[LA]
DEAN IS THE MAN!
Dean has, again rightly, refused to pay for new elections, saying national committee funds must be spent to help elect the Democratic nominee this fall. It's the responsibility of the state officials who broke the rules to find the money to fix this problem -- and voters must demand they do it. Florida's Gov. Charlie Crist, mentioned as a possible running mate for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, should be especially keen to avoid the appearance that his state has once again placed a heavy thumb on the nation's electoral scales. [la]
THE PUBLIC SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY!
The more important question is how the balloting can be conducted most fairly at this late stage. The least expensive and cleanest solution is a mail-in ballot, which could be sent to all Florida and Michigan registered Democrats in early June, after the other states have voted.[la]
DEMS PLAN A MAKE OVER/DO-OVER!
In an effort to resolve the impasse, officials in both states this week have publicly floated the idea of holding do-over contests -- in essence, newly sanctioned primaries or caucuses or, in the case of Michigan, a hybrid "firehouse primary." [w]
THE INTERNET IS BUZZING
Talk of revotes has produced a flurry of meetings, phone calls, e-mails and negotiations, all aimed at resolving a situation that has become an embarrassment to all sides and an irritation to the campaigns. So far, however, there is more stalemate than progress. On Wednesday night, Democratic members of Congress from the two states met to discuss possible solutions but quickly found there was little consensus. [w]
Michigan and Florida officials are confronting the obstacles to scheduling and organizing new contests and, especially, finding a way to pay for them. Elected officials in both states have resolved that taxpayers would not be asked to foot the bill, while Dean has told them not to look to the national party for support. [w]
Florida officials have thrown out a variety of estimates for what it would cost to run a new primary, including a high of $25 million. Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm (D) said yesterday that redoing her state's primary could cost as much as $10 million. [w]
GO MICHIGAN!
Granted, this might have the perverse effect of giving the two states even more influence than anyone dreamed of when their politicians plotted to hold their primaries ridiculously early. But it's still better than silencing voters for the sins of their party leaders. [la]
THEY ARE RENEWED! GOD SAVE US ALL!
Officials in Michigan and Florida have shown renewed interest in holding repeat nominating contests, and Dean has urged party officials in both states to come up with plans for how that can be done so their delegates can be counted at the national convention in late August.[usa]
